This weekend Rusty and I put up our long awaited tomato trellis! We have had the wood for some time, but we kept on running into roadblocks that kept us from putting it up. First of all, it rained the whole week after we bought the wood (rain + us working outside = no good), then we decided to spray the backyard to solve our mosquito infestation problem (mosquitoes + Rachel = lots of itching). We took another trip to Lowes to get the insect killer during a different weekend, which Rusty applied right away. So...after waiting so long and worrying that our plants were going to grow too big for their britches, we finally were able to put up some help for the little guys. We used cedar wood so that (we were told) it wouldn't rot. And, hopefully, we will be able to dig up and use next year for the same thing! Here is Rusty hammering our foundation supports into the ground. Gooooo Rusty!
We nailed long nails into the front foundation poles for the individual 'shelves' to rest on. Then, we tied the shelves with twine to give them more support.
Then, because the horizontals were too high for the first part of the growing season, we tied more twine to make a half-shelf for the tomatoes and green beans. Here are the tomato plants enjoying their new support.
The idea is that the tomatoes will grow (hopefully) and cling to the horizontal boards. Who knows how tall they will grow, but hopefully they will be happy when they do. I know we will be happy that the tomatoes won't crack the plant in half. The little green beanies are on the left of the tomatoes. You can bearly see them with all the grass, but they are there and are happy to have the little twine half-shelf. And, doesn't it just look so pretty?? Now...if only we could speed up this whole garden-growing thing...
